Oils and Scrolls are both enchantments you apply to weapons in SULFUR. Oils adjust weapon stats, while Scrolls usually change elements, status effects, or projectiles. Both use enchantment slots and generally increase durability consumption, so check their costs before you commit.
How do enchantment slots, durability, and removal work?
You gain one enchantment slot per weapon level, up to five slots.
| Rule | What it means for your weapon |
|---|---|
| Slots | Each enchantment needs one empty slot. Weapons gain experience and levels by killing enemies. |
| Oil limit | You can use different Oils within your available slots, but cannot apply the same Oil twice. |
| Scroll limit | You can apply only one Scroll per weapon, even when other slots remain empty. |
| Normal wear | Each enchantment normally adds 1 durability consumed per shot, reaching 6 with five enchantments. |
| Oil exceptions | Oils marked “Does not increase durability loss” do not add that extra wear. |
| Scroll multipliers | Some Scrolls multiply durability consumption, allowing the cost to exceed 6 per shot. |
| Removal | Buy Arthur's Baptismal Font to remove enchantments. See how to remove Oils before clearing yours. |
A Scroll with +200% durability loss triples the cost after the normal enchantment increases. That Scroll alone costs 6 durability per shot: (1 + 1) × 3. Add four Oils that increase wear, and each shot costs 18: (1 + 5) × 3.
What do Oils change?
Oils modify damage, projectile count, critical chance, handling, durability, and loot, usually trading benefits for penalties.
You can also change bullet speed, size, penetration, and bounces. Flat stat changes apply before percentage changes, regardless of application order. Read the SULFUR Oils effects list to compare individual bottles and their drawbacks.
What do Scrolls change?
Scrolls add elemental or status effects, or transform your weapon's projectiles.
Scroll of Embers gives you a 20% chance to apply Fire. Scroll of Light turns your weapon into a Railgun, while Scroll of Explosions makes bullets explode on impact. Compare individual effects in the SULFUR Scrolls list.
You can find Stage 1 Scrolls through drops, loot, and merchants inside or outside the Church. Stage 2 Scrolls also come from combining two Stage 1 Scrolls. Check how to combine Scrolls when you want a specific result.
Which enchantments should you choose?
You can pair Oils to offset penalties or strengthen a particular weapon setup.

For example, Gemini Oil plus Add Damage Oil gives Damage -15, Projectile Amount +100%, and Spread +0.7. Larger bullets also enlarge area effects such as explosions. Bounces help close-range weapons clear rooms when you have many projectiles or a high fire rate.
