SULFUR Game Guide & Tips
SULFUR is a first-person dungeon shooter with RPG systems, where you loot, upgrade weapons, and extract between expeditions.
- Death costs equipment. You can lose the gear you take into a run, so choose your loadout carefully.
- Charge your amulet. You need a charge to return to the Church. Without one, you must finish the level or die.
- Bring repair kits. Your weapons and armor degrade during runs and can break.
- Prepare between runs. You can organize supplies at the Church, cook ingredients, and combine weapons with attachments and enchantments.
Each run is a first-person dive through a generated level.

You progress from the Caves through the regions below, finishing beyond the Veil. Rooms, enemies, and loot locations vary between runs, so follow regional landmarks rather than memorizing room layouts.
| Region, in order | Boss or final encounter | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Caves | Cousin | Charge your amulet on Floor 4. Break Cousin's mud armor and clear summoned goblins. |
| Town | Three railgun enemies | Break masks, use cover, and attack railgun enemies while they reload. |
| Sewers | No main boss | Watch for poisonous frogs and follow yellow-lit openings. |
| Hedge Maze | No traditional boss | Navigate toward the distant castle. Shoot eyes, then use explosives to finish recovering creatures. |
| Dungeon | Executioner-like miniboss | Look above dead ends for platforms. Break the miniboss's cone, shoot its orb, then retreat. |
| Castle | St. Lucia | Bring ammunition and repairs. Clear assassins and shoot the projectiles appearing during darkness. |
| Forest | Terrorbaum | Follow roads to golden gates. Shoot Terrorbaum's eyes and move away from marked ground. |
| Shav'Wani Bridge | Transitional encounters | Follow the bridge toward the Fortress and conserve ammunition. |
| Fortress | The Emperor | Bring repair supplies. Target the worm's final segment, then keep moving during its spider phase. |
| Desert | Desert Claus | Follow roads and stay inside the moving sand dome during the boss fight. |
| Beyond the Veil | The Witch | Repair and restock before entering. You cannot teleport back afterward. |

Toilet
The Toilet connects item storage between toilets, including those hidden in secret rooms. You can destroy cracked Caves walls with explosives to find some secret rooms. Arthur sells the Church Toilet for 18 stamps; it appears beside the Caves entrance. See the SULFUR toilet room guide for storage access and locations.
Bosses
You face six main bosses in this order, alongside smaller encounters between them. The Sewers have no main boss; Town's railgun trio and Dungeon's miniboss are separate encounters.
| Order | Boss | Region | Drops or rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cousin | Caves | Money, up to two loot-pool items, and a Suitcase if you have not collected it. |
| 2 | St. Lucia | Castle | Three items from a shared rare loot pool. |
| 3 | Terrorbaum | Forest | Reward chest favoring higher-tier weapons, with rare armor and accessories. |
| 4 | The Emperor | Fortress | No notable direct drop; collect loot beyond the arena. |
| 5 | Desert Claus | Desert | Four Christmas Present containers. |
| 6 | The Witch | Beyond the Veil | No drop table listed. |
Check the SULFUR bosses guide for each fight and its rewards.
Final Boss: The Witch
The Witch waits in Beyond the Veil, where you cannot use your amulet to escape. You must handle teleportation, copies, shockwaves, lasers, and summoned enemies. Older descriptions allow a single-shot kill; newer descriptions include damage gates and repeated phases. Prepare for the full fight with the SULFUR final boss guide.
Weapons
You can modify guns with attachments, oils, and scrolls; ammunition and weapon type help determine base damage. Weapon quality does not change a weapon's stats.
| Weapon type | Examples |
|---|---|
| Melee Weapons | Wakizashi |
| Pistols | P38 Dirk, Klein Bauer |
| Revolvers | Snut .38, .357 Balthazar |
| Shotguns | Mossman, Majordome, Augusta |
| Submachine Guns | Drifter 9, Vrede |
| Assault Rifles | Socom ACR, CYB47 |
| Light Machine Guns | Rektor 100rd, Duhar |
| Rifles | Knop .22, Farsight |
| Sniper Rifles | Rokua .308, Dolphin 99 |
| Throwable Weapons | Pineapple Grenade, Sulfur Grenade |
You receive the P38 Dirk during the tutorial, and it returns after each death. Ralphie sells ammunition and Repair Kit supplies. Compare categories and gun attributes in the SULFUR weapons guide.
Best Weapons
Vrede gives you balanced close-to-medium-range shooting, while Klein Bauer offers high fire rate and durability. Catacoil Rapid X supports precise or extra-projectile setups, depending on your oils. Compare their strengths in the best SULFUR weapons guide.
Builds
You build around a weapon's strengths, then use attachments to offset some oil penalties. One long-range shotgun setup combines Majordome with Late Boom Oil, Black Friday Oil, Hip Marksman Oil, and Dead Center Oil. It also uses Scroll of Holy Fire; its effectiveness after 1.0 balancing remains under review. See the best SULFUR gun builds for complete named combinations.
Attachments
You can equip muzzle attachments, sights, laser sights, and chamber attachments. The Weapon Workbench near Ralphie removes all attachments for a fee and returns them to you. It does not remove enchantments or return Chamber Chisels. Use the SULFUR attachments guide to choose and remove your upgrades.
Oils
Oils and scrolls are both enchantments: oils modify weapon attributes, while scrolls change elemental, status, or projectile behavior. You usually trade one stat for another when applying oils.
| Oil | Benefit | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Add Damage Oil | +15 damage | No additional penalty listed. |
| Attack Speed Oil | +20% RPM | No additional penalty listed. |
| Braced Oil | -30% recoil | -20% jump power. |
| Brute Oil | +30 damage | +0.7 spread. |
| Aimless Oil | +30% critical chance | Disables aiming. |
Fixed-value changes apply before percentage changes, regardless of application order. Check effects and penalties in the SULFUR oil guide.
Best Oils
You should choose oils for your weapon and purpose, rather than expect one universal winner. Gemini Oil with Add Damage Oil gives +100% projectiles, -15 damage, and +0.7 spread in the documented combination. Compare combinations in the best SULFUR oils guide.
How to Remove Oil
You remove all weapon enchantments at the Baptismal Font, rather than selecting one oil. Buy it from Arthur for 10 stamps; it appears beside the Church altar. The removal fee starts at 50 and increases with each use. Follow the SULFUR remove oil guide before clearing your weapon's enchantments.
Scrolls
You can apply one scroll per weapon to change its elements, status effects, or projectiles. Stage 1 scrolls come from random drops, loot, and vendors around the Church.
| Stage 1 scroll | Effect | Main modifier or trigger chance |
|---|---|---|
| Scroll of Dark | Blinding | -80% damage. |
| Scroll of Earth | Stun | 20% trigger chance. |
| Scroll of Embers | Fire | 20% trigger chance. |
| Scroll of Frostbite | Frost | No additional stat modifier listed. |
| Scroll of Light | Railgun conversion | -25% fire rate, +999 penetrations, -50% penetration damage multiplier. |
| Scroll of Nature | Root | 40% trigger chance. |
| Scroll of Plague | Poison | 25% trigger chance. |
| Scroll of Surge | Electrocution | 15% trigger chance. |
| Scroll of Water | Wet | -99% damage; bullet drop: 5. |
You combine two Stage 1 scrolls with Kevin upstairs in the Church to create Stage 2 scrolls. Earth + Earth makes Aftershock; Surge + Surge makes Chain Lightning; Nature + Surge makes Least Resistance. Embers + Frostbite is an exception: it produces the Stage 1 Scroll of Water. Scrolls also increase durability consumption, so budget repairs before enchanting. Find effects and combinations in the SULFUR scrolls guide.
Best Scrolls
Chain Lightning suits fast-firing or multi-projectile weapons, damaging and disrupting nearby enemies while you focus one target. Aftershock gives those weapons crowd control through area stuns. Compare these choices in the best SULFUR scrolls guide.
Recipes
You combine ingredients at cooking stations to make healing food, useful drinks, and other craftable items.
| Recipe | One ingredient combination | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Fried Mushroom | Velvet Bell ×8 | 15 health over 4 seconds. |
| Fondue | Cheese ×2 | 50 health over 4 seconds. |
| Marshmallows | Sugar + Egg | 40 health over 2 seconds. |
| Pizza Slice | Pizza | 100 health over 5 seconds. |
| Green Tea | Bottled Water + Matcha | 10 health over 5 seconds; +150% melee damage for 60 seconds; removes Frozen and Poisoned. |
| Pilk | Skimmed Milk + Sulf Cola | 60 health over 10 seconds; +3 extra jumps for 30 seconds; removes Burning. |
Recovery durations have changed in 1.0: Double Cheeseburger now gives 75 health over 20 seconds. Use the SULFUR recipes guide to check ingredient combinations and food effects.
How to Get Recipes
You discover recipes by combining ingredients, speaking to certain characters, and finding recipe books or pages. See how to get recipes in SULFUR for the available discovery methods.
Crafting
You can quickly craft discovered recipes from the recipe list when you have the required ingredients. Crafting also includes supplies: Cloth + Blood makes First Aid Kit, while Paper ×2 makes Toilet Paper. Use the SULFUR crafting guide for food, supplies, and equipment combinations.
Best Food
You should choose healing food for recovery speed and drinks for the effects your next encounter needs. Double Cheeseburger has conflicting values: 200 health over 10 seconds, or a reduced amount after 1.0 balancing. The reduced amount remains under review; healing remaining at full health is also reported to clear in 1.0. Compare healing and utility choices in the best SULFUR food guide.
Endings
Defeating The Witch unlocks Endless Mode, while the story returns you to the opening cave through another car crash. You can repeat the journey, revisit regions, fight bosses again, and keep collecting equipment. There is also a claim that you can choose to break the cycle, but its trigger remains unconfirmed. Read the SULFUR ending guide for the loop and what follows the final fight.
True Ending
A separate true ending and its requirements remain unconfirmed. Some players say there is no true ending; others call the repeating loop the true ending. Completing the game without charging the amulet has also been reported to produce the same ending. Check the SULFUR true ending guide before committing to an uncharged-amulet run.
